Air Traffic In October 80 Percent Below The Same Month Last Year / Europe-Wide Lockdowns Intensify Decline

November 2020

The number of passengers at Schönefeld (until October 24th) / BER (since October 25th) and Tegel airports continued to decline in October 2020. Last month, a total of 581,322 passengers flew from both airports. Compared to September, the number of passengers fell again by 16.2 percent. One of the reasons for the decline is the continuing increase in the number of infections across Europe and the resulting lockdowns that further restrict travel. The SXF / BER location handled a total of 181,692 passengers; in Tegel there were 399,630 passengers. Compared to the same month last year, this was a decrease of almost 82 percent at both locations.

9,011 flight movements were registered for both airports, of which Schönefeld carried out 3,428 and Tegel carried out 5,583 flights. Compared to the previous year, this means a minus of 64.8 percent.

In the period from January to October, a total of 8,619,913 passengers have been carried so far. Of these around 2,782,139 in Schönefeld and 5,837,774 in Tegel. This means that the number of passengers up to and including October is only 28.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “The extremely difficult situation in our industry is worsening. With massive travel restrictions and extensive lockdowns in many countries, it is becoming increasingly difficult to travel by air. Airports and airlines are in a crisis, the end of which is not yet in sight. The fact that the capital region with BER now has the best conditions to optimally support the economic recovery after the pandemic is currently only a small consolation. In order to survive the severe crisis, like all airports in Germany, we are dependent on the support of the shareholders. “

The October traffic report with the final figures will be available online at the end of the month:
